Best Windows 8 Hidden Features

Windows 8 is full of awesome features and handy shortcuts, but what you may not know is that it's got a lot of handy, lesser-known settings under the hood. Here are 10 of Windows 8's best kept secrets.
10. Run Automatic Maintenance on a Schedule
Windows 8 Hidden FeaturesWindows 8 has a new feature that runs automatic maintenance tasks like software updates, security scanning, and other diagnostic tests daily. By default, it runs them at 3AM, of if you're using your computer, the next time your computer becomes idle. You can change this time in the Action Center, as well as tell Windows whether you want to wake your computer up to perform these tasks. You can also perform the maintenance manually from the Action Center, if you desire.
9. Customize the Apps in the Search Bar
Full size
When you start searching from the Start screen, you'll see a list of apps under the search bar. Click on one of them, and you'll search those same terms in that specific app. What you may not know is that you can tweak this list, removing and adding apps through Windows 8's settings. Bring up the Charms bar (with Win+C), click Settings, and go down to "Change PC Settings." From there, choose Search from the left sidebar, and turn off the apps you don't want taking up space in this menu.
8. Enable the Hidden "Aero Lite" Theme
Windows 8 Hidden FeaturesWhen Windows 8 was in the testing phases, it had an additional "Aero Lite" theme that took away some of the transparent glass features of Windows Aero. However, the final version of Windows 8 opted for a much more basic theme than the testing builds, so Aero Lite no longer shows up—however, you can still find it in the Themes folder on your computer. With a few small tweaks, you can re-enable it in your Personalization preferences. It isn't too different from the default themes, but it does give a slightly different look to the title button bars and some other small parts of the OS.
7. Enable the Secret Start Screen Animation
Windows 8 Hidden FeaturesWhen you first sign onto Windows 8, you get a very cool flow-y animation of all your tiles filling up the screen. After that, though, the Start screen has a much more toned-down animation. If you want to enable the cooler animation for every launch of the Start screen, you can do so with a simple Registry tweak. You can also customize certain settings for the animation too, which is pretty cool.
6. Customize More Icons in Windows Explorer
Windows 8 Hidden FeaturesRemember in Windows 7, when you created a library, it had that ugly, nondescript icon? And you had to go through somecomplicated process to change it? Well, Windows 8 now lets you customize your Library icons right from its settings. Just right-click on the Library, go to Properties, and you should see the option to change the library's icon right at the bottom. Bonus tip: If Windows Explorer's Favorites icon is getting in your way in the sidebar, you can right-click on the sidebar to hide it (sadly, you can't do the same for Libraries, Homegroup, or other annoying icons).
5. Create and Name App Groups on the Start Screen
Full size
When you first open up the Start screen, you'll notice that some of your apps are in their own "groups." You can create your own groups just by dragging an app's tile to an empty space on the Start screen—it'll create its own group. If you want to name your groups—say, for "Work," "Games," and so on—you can do so by clicking the small button in the bottom-right corner of the screen and right-clicking on the groups.
4. Take Faster Screenshots
Full size
For a long time, Windows had an absurd screenshot shortcut in which you had to press Print Screen, then open up an app like Paint or the GIMP and paste in your screenshot from the clipboard. Well, no more! Now, if you press Win+Print Screen (or Win+Volume Down on a tablet), Windows will take a screenshot of your screen and automatically save it in your Pictures folder as a PNG file. It still isn't as powerful as something like Skitch, but if you only need the occasional screenshot, it's nice to see a simpler shortcut built in to the OS.
3. Tweak the Number of Rows on the Start Screen
Windows 8 Hidden FeaturesBy default, the Start screen fills your monitor up with as many rows of tiles as it can fit, up to 6 rows. If you'd like to lower that number—maybe you have a particularly cool background, or your groups just aren't that big—you can tweak this number by editing the Registry. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to let you pack more tiles onto smaller monitors, but it's a cool little tweak if you want to give your Start screen a more minimal look.
2. Hide Recent Files from Your Jump Lists
Full size
Jump Lists were a great addition in Windows 7 that helped boost your productivity, but their "Recent Items" feature were a possible privacy concern—say, if there were documents or files you didn't want others to know you had viewed. Windows 8 lets you customize Jump Lists more than Windows 7, giving you the option to hide recently opened items and recently opened programs. To access the preferences, just right-click on the Taskbar, go to Properties, and click the Jump Lists tab.
1. Get More Out of Your Multiple Monitors
Full size
If you have multiple monitors, you've probably noticed that Windows extends your taskbar across both screens. It does more than just that, though: you can press Win+PgUp to move your current app to your left monitor, and Win+PgDn to move it to the right monitor. In addition, if you go to the Desktop Background section of your Personalization settings, you can right-click on any individual wallpapers and choose which monitor you'd like it to show up on. Of course, if you like things the old way, you can also turn off the dual taskbar in Taskbar Properties.

BlackBerry 10 Aristo specifications

Research in Motion. Expect only the *best! If this leak holds true, RIM will be back as a dominant player.
This past week readers were treated to leaks galore. Covering the spec lists on the full touch BlackBerry 10 L-Series (Laguna, Lisbon, & London) to render mock-ups on the L and N-Series, the first BlackBerry 10 keyboard phone. While the N-Series slightly disappointed, my spirits were again lifted after seeing this on my desk.
I’ve never seen the A series mentioned anywhere, so not only are we revealing the specs but the models name.  At this point, I’m unable to comment on whether this will be a series or a one-off phone for those who want larger screens.
With the height and width seeing a slight bump, the spectacular specifications listed here could only mean RIM is damn serious about claiming the market it once owned.
The BlackBerry 10 Aristo (Aristo” is Greek for “the best”) I think will be the ultimate of the BlackBerry 10’s to come. Let’s go check out the specs already!
Getting technical – In depth:
Using the baseband modem is the MDM9x15 (possibly the 9615 – if so this is the same one found in the iPhone 5), which is a so-called world mode mobile data modem and according to Qualcomm’s documentation, supports “LTE FDD/TDD CAT3, SVLTE-DB, Release 8 DC-HSPA+, TD-SCDMA, GSM/GPRS/EDGE, EGAL, 1x Adv., EV-DO Rev. A/B”.
The processor is a Qualcomm APQ8064 Krait Quad Core 1.5GHz. The APQ8064 was announced in July 2012 at Uplink, Qualcomm’s developer conference by Raj Talluri who was previously employed at Texas Instrument and was closely involved with the developments of the OMAP 3 and OMAP 4 chipsets. Classifying the APQ8064 in the S4 Pro family this chipset featuring four Krait cores running at up to 1.5 GHz when all four cores are taxed, or up to 1.7 GHz when only one core is active*!
Aristo:

    136 x 68 x 8.85 mm / 5.35” x 2.59” x 0.34” in

L-Series: (Laguna, Lisbon, London)

    130 x 65.6 x 9mm / 5.11” x 2.58” x 0.35” in

Display: OCTA Glass OLED 4.65?, 1280×720 – 24bit – 16:9 (L-Series: 1280×768 resolution)
Those that are unfamiliar, OCTA is a development of Samsung Mobile Display. OCTA – On-Cell Touch Active-Matrix Light-Emitting Diode (AMOLED). This display was designed and produced to help accelerate performance demands from today’s mobile devices. With On-Cell Touch this removes embedded layers on the screen giving it the competitive edge of the 8.85mm depth – the thinnest BlackBerry so far.
With the baseband modem we know this will be a world device.
NA = North America

GSM – Quad band (not specified)
    WCDMA – 2100/1900/850-850MHz
    LTE – AWS/700/1900/850MHz

EU = European Union/APAC = Asia Pacific

GSM – Quad band (not specified)
    WCDMA – 2100/1900/850-850/900MHz
    LTE – 1800/2.6GHz/800/900MHz

Another in the full touch family, this BlackBerry 10 is a Capacitive All Touch device. Interaction will be no doubt the same rich and intuitive gestures from the PlayBook to the Dev Alpha’s.
The camera repeats with 8MP. This should have seen 12MP with everything else in place. The usual suspects of 1080p/30fps are here. The front-facing camera see’s a nice 2MP update at 720p
Now it gets exciting! 2GB of RAM. This is what I want to see in all 2013 models. 16GB onboard Flash is present and includes a 16GB MicroSD card fitting in a Hot Swappable MicroSD slot. Still no mention for support of the 64GB microSD.
Wi-Fi will have the “n” inclusion with backwards compatibility of a/b/g. With a speed boast from 2.5GHz/5GHz with 4G MobileHotspot.
I said it before: connectivity, accessibility, and the sharing of information – This has not been forgotten. MicroUSB, MicroHDMI, NFC, and DLNA come treated with Bluetooth 4.0. This is a major update as so far leaked documentations indicate that the L-Series devices mentioned will see BT 2.1 which is a huge let down going forward.
Audio over-haul: Two microphones are common, but having four with Noise Reduction is just a bonus. The over-haul is the Wideband AMR. Wideband Adaptive Multi-Rate uses a speech compression technique to increase the audio bandwidth to 7 kHz. This would roughly double the speech bandwidth compared to narrow-band AMR without impacting the radio and/or backhaul requirements.
Holy smokes Batman! The Aristo will be packed with a 2800mAh battery. The downside…it will be a sealed battery with a non-removable door. Given that it will be 8.85mm in thickness, this wasn’t a big surprise. However, the BlackBerry community aren’t familiar to sealed units (aside from PlayBook and Dev Alpha owners) compared to iPhone users as all previous BlackBerry’s have removable batteries. This will take getting used to for the most, but under the new architecture of QNX, I don’t believe battery pulling will be of a common practise. The PlayBook’s are a good example of this.
Among the sensors, Face detect for phone calls shows up here. I mentioned Apple’s FaceTime with a question mark in a previous post, but it sounds like the ability to answer calls by a quick scan of the face. This tech reminds me of Samsung’s face detection for unlocking access. Let’s hope RIM or it’s third-party choice if this is the case has significantly improved this functionality as this would be something heavily adopted by motorist worldwide.
SIM remains to be a mystery. I still believe the MicroSIM has been adopted for BlackBerry 10's, although I’m really hoping it will be a NanoSIM.
The specifications left out are straight-forward and were not areas that needed to be expanded and/or explored on.
Though not being officially announced this is indeed classified as a leak. So take as you may.

Google Nexus 7

With a capable quad-core processor, an excellent display, and an affordable price, the Google Nexus 7provides great value in a compact 7-inch package. It's also running the latest version of Android, Jelly Bean, which brings a smooth and, dare we say, "buttery" user experience.
Install Adobe Flash
One of the major differences between Apple's iOS and Android used to be the latter's support for Flash. Unfortunately, it's no longer the case--Adobe is stopping development of Flash on Android mobile browsers and there's no official Flash support on Jelly Bean, too. This means that you won't be able to find it on the Google Play store while using the Nexus 7.
However, you can download the Flash apk from XDA Developers and install the app manually. Do note that you'll first have to go to Settings > Security and check "Unknown sources" before you can install the apk.
Since the preloaded Chrome browser on the Nexus 7 doesn't support Flash, you'll also need to install a compatible browser, such as Firefox Beta.
Unlock the screen rotation
By default, the screen of the Nexus 7 is locked into portrait mode, which is probably most appropriate for its 7-inch form factor. The screen orientation does change to the landscape mode in games. However, if you prefer the screen to rotate with the tablet orientation, you can unlock it just by pulling down the notification bar and clicking on the Lock icon beside Settings.

Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) finally added the ability to take screenshots within the OS and this feature is present on the Nexus 7. To capture what's on the screen, just hold the power and volume down buttons together for a couple of seconds. You'll get both visual and audio cues to tell you that the screenshot has been successfully taken. You can then open and view the screenshot immediately from the Notification bar.

You'll get both visual and audio cues to tell you that the screenshot has been successfully taken. You can then open and view the screenshot immediately from the Notification bar.Turn it into an e-book reader
The Nexus 7 isn't as light and thin as E Ink-based readers, such as the Amazon Kindle and the Nook. But compared with 10-inch tablets, it's handy enough to serve as a pretty good e-book reader--you can hold it with one hand for hours. It doesn't come close to the Kindle in terms of battery life, but at around 9 hours, it's relatively good for a tablet. Besides, you'll be able to view books and magazines in full color on the Nexus 7, something which you can't do on the Kindle.
Connect the Nexus 7 to USB storage devices
With just 8GB of internal storage on the base model, you may find yourself having to ration the content you load on the Nexus 7. The good news is that with the right app and an inexpensive cable, you will be able to connect the tablet to an external USB storage device such as flash drives and SD cards.
First, you'll need a USB OTG (On-The-Go) cable, which can be bought cheaply from online retailers such as Amazon or DealExtreme. This cable connects the micro-USB port on one end and has a normal-sized USB port on the other hand, where you can plug in a USB storage device.
Next, you'll need to get the Nexus Media Importer app from HomeySoft, which allows the Nexus 7 to view and copy files from the attached device. Note that it doesn't work the other way round--you can't copy files from the Nexus 7 to the external storage device. While the app should work with most USB storage devices (as long as it's formatted as FAT16, FAT32 or NTFS), there's no guarantee. We recommend that you try the app first with your USB devices--the app isn't free, but Google Play allows full refunds within 15 minutes of purchase.

Google Bank Open for Business

Google Bank

Google, the search engine company that also happens to do 35 other things, is expanding its horizons once again with a new financial services division. Today the multi-billion dollar corporation launched a new credit business in the United Kingdom with plans to expand to other countries in the next few weeks. Its not the first time that that Google has offered credit to drive more AdWords investment-Its been running a pilot with 1400 businesses from a variety of industry in the U.S for a year from Kuru Footwear to ‘Get Bats Out’ bat removal—and their feedback was overwhelmingly positive. In a survey conducted after the pilot launched, 74% of respondents said they now use AdWords Business Credit as their primary form of AdWords payment.Under this program Google will offer credit- between $200 and $10,000 -- to spend on Google's money-making AdWords program. Google will issue credit cards as part of the new financing program

Details:
In the UK, AdWords Business Credit will have a variable 11.9% APR Representative.

In the US, AdWords Business Credit will offer an APR as low as 8.99%*, the same rate as in the pilot.

Neither card will have annual fees, and they will both have an ample credit limit for AdWords.

We’re teaming up with Barclaycard, part of the Barclays group, in the UK and Comenity Capital Bank in the US to issue the card. Both are MasterCard cards.

AdWords Business Credit can only be used for AdWords advertising purchases.

.The move comes just a few days after news emerged that Amazon was launching its own loan business. Though details are still unconfirmed since Amazon hasn't formally launched the program, Amazon Lending will provide capital to small business to stock up on inventory before the holiday seasons. Since Amazon takes a cut of all the sales through its website, helping small shops sell more goods makes great sense. "This is definitely cheaper than credit cards and faster and easier than banks, so may fill a big hole for sellers."

Don't expect to see Google and Amazon ATMs on the street corner any time soon, though. For now, both of the companies' programs will focus on commercial loans. Of course, this is a company that's already busy trading energy, rigging up high-speed WiFi in middle America, developing self-driving cars and tryingto make everybody look like Star Trek characters. So who knows how far they're willing to go.
